ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS AND PROFESSIONAL TRAINING

MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA

Acupuncture

  • The therapist has to be member in good standing of College of accupuncturists from his province

Chiropractic

  • The therapist has to be member in good standing of College of  chiropractors from his province

Homeopathy

1500 hours, distributed as follows:

  • 735 hours of homeopathic theory
  • 240 hours observation training
  • 180 hours anatomy and physiology
  • 150 hours medical pathology and microbiology
  • 135 hours of complementary disciplines: energetic, nutrition, help relationship, office management and ethics
  • 60 hours of individual clinical training.

Kinesitherapy

Prerequisite:
400 hours of recognized studies as massage therapy practitioner

Minimum of 600 hours in kinesitherapy training distributed as follows:

  • Therapeutic massage - Kinesitherapy component
  • Anatomy III
  • Sports massage and reflexology
  • Helping relationship - Level II
  • Massage for pregnant women and childrens massage
  • Initiation to Californian massage
  • Polarity
  • Business administration
  • Supervised training
  • A training in Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) of 15 hours from a recognized organization is required.

Kinesiology

  • Bachelor's degree, BAC in Kinesiology

Massotherapy
Massage therapist

400 hours minimum of supervised training distributed as follows:

  • Introduction (15hours)
  • Approach: 150 hours minimum. You can choose one of the following approaches:  Swedish  (190 h), Californian (190 h), Shiatsu (190 h), Esalen (190 h), Amma (150h), Neo-reichien (210 h), Jin Shin Do (250 h minimum), Polarity (190 h), Thai Yoga Massage TYM (240h), Traditional Chinese medicine TCM, Sport massage (195 heures) including Trigger points  (15 h), therapeutic Shiatsu   (330 h to 480 h), Swiss massage (1300 h), Momentum (190h), OCÉÜM (190h), Trager (250h)
  • Anatomy: (45 hours)
  • Physiopathology: (45 hours)
  • Professional aspects (15 hours)
  • Deontology, legal aspects: (30 hours)
  • Sexuality and professional practice: (45 hours)
  • Helping Relationship: (30 hours)
  • Interview techniques and record keeping: (15 hours)
  • Supervised training: (30 hours minimum 60 hours maximum).

Senior massage therapist

Prerequisite: Massage therapist (400 hours)

1000 hours, including a mandatory training as massage therapist of 400  hours and at least 600 hours of supplementary training distributed as follows:

  • A 150 hour technique minimum. You can choose one of the following approaches:  Swedish  (190 h), Kinesitherapy, Californien (190 h), Shiatsu (190 h), Esalen (190 h), Amma (150h), Neo-reichien (210 h), Jin Shin Do (250 h minimum), Polarity (190 h), Thai Yoga Massage TYM (240h), Traditional Chinese medicine TCM, Sport massage (195 heures) including Trigger point  (15 h), therapeutic Shiatsu   (330 h to 480 h, Swiss massage (1300 h), Momentum (190h), OCÉÜM (190h), Trager (250h)
  • Student training and supervision: 40 h minimum 60 h maximum.
  • Personal integration and professional intervention (45 h)
  • Helping relationship and interview technique (45 h)
  • Administration, marketing, record keeping (45 h).
  • Anatomy / physiology / pathology (45 h)
  • Optional classes of which: psychopathology, psychosomatic, helping relationship, psychology, nutrition (45 h)
  • 225 h complements and/or advanced training in the disciplines of your choice that are recognized by the ACDM while respecting the maximums of each.
  • Additional techniques (min. 45 h): Lymphatic Drainage, sports massage, reflexology, therapeutic touch or deepening  in a basic technique (max. 100 h) in one of physical, energy, psycho-physical approaches recognized as practitioner. Alexander, Feldenkrais. Professional improvement: physiotherapy, TRP, ergotherapy, homeopathy, acupuncture, naturopathy, osteopathy,   somatotherapy, nutritional approaches, aromatherapy, algotherapy.

NLP Master

Requirements:

  • Training as Hypnosis practitioner

Training should have been provided by an INLPTA (International NLP Trainers Association) accredited school.

Naturopathy

To register as a certified Naturopath within ACTMD association, you must have 1680 hours of training including 400 hours of clinical experience in a school recognized by the ACTMD.  The schools must offer advanced training in anatomy, physiology, nutrition, healing plants, code of ethics and finally clinical evaluation.

Doctor in naturopathy

  • In few provinces of Canada, the medical training of the doctors in naturopathy consists of  four years full time program, is 4000 hours, which includes clinical extensive residency training in place of residence.
  • Upon completion of the four-year program, students must successfully complete the internationally sanctioned naturopathic examinations leading to licensure by the North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners before obtaining a licence to practice.

Naturotherapy

Prerequisite: Practitioner in massage therapy (400 hours)
To this basic training, the therapist must add:

  • 400h of naturotherapy approaches or
  • 200h of naturotherapy approaches and 200h of complementary massage techniques

  • Auriculotherapy
  • Phytotherapy
  • Reiki
  • MLD
  • Nutrition
  • Essentials oils
  • Reflexology
  • ...

Orthotherapy
Prerequisite: practitioner in massage therapy level (400 hours)
To this basic training, the therapist must add:
Orthotherapy training

Ostheopathy D.O.
Prerequisite : University degree in health sciences or equivalent (physiotherapy, biology, pharmacy, etc.)

Training in an osteopathy school recognized by ACTMD.
Theses succeeded in presence of an osteopath jury or clinical internship

Hypnosis practitioner

  • Before 2018 - 1 000h
  • From 2018 - 1 255 h

Physiotherapy

  • The therapist must be member in good standing of College of  physiotherapists in his province

Physical rehabilitation therapy (PRT)

  • The therapist must be a member in good standing of College of  physical Rehabilitation Therapist in his province

Somatherapy

  • Awarded an attestation of soma-therapy

Title recognize by ACTMD
ACTMD accredited members will have one of the following titles:

  • Acupuncturist
  • Chiropractor
  • Homoeopath
  • Hypnosis pratitioner
  • Kinesiologist
  • Kinesitherapist
  • Massage therapist
  • Naturopath
  • Naturotherapist
  • NLP Master
  • Orthotherapist
  • Osteopath
  • Physiotherapist
  • Physical rehabilitation therapist (PTR)

You can also hold 2 titles ex: Massage therapist-Naturotherapist, Kinesitherapist-Naturotherapist etc.

It is understood that the applicant will:

  • Meet the standards required by the ACTMD and hold diplomas.
  • Respect code of ethics
  • Demonstrate a balanced personality.
  • pass a practical exam and, if necessary, a theoretical exam proving the competence of the candidate and the validity of the documents presented.
  • Have a high school diploma or the equivalent or r elevant experience
  • Be 18 years old

MODIFICATIONS

Training hours required, for the above disciplines and their complements maybve subject to change.

Please note that the ACTMD recognizes only the disciplines mentioned above. However, if yours is not listed, additions maybe considered.

The training must have been completed in an school recognized by the ACTMD.
